Marriage/Civil Union License Instructions

WHERE TO APPLY FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

If one or both of the Applicants live in Fairfield, you must apply at the Registrar's Office of Vital Statistics in Fairfield for a marriage license. 

If neither person lives in New Jersey, then the couple must apply in the town in New Jersey where the ceremony will take place.

Residents of the Township of Fairfield must schedule an appointment by calling the Municipal Clerk's Office at (973) 882-2700 x2501.

*APPLICATIONS ARE TAKEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY (MONDAY AND TUESDAYS ~ 8:30AM - 3:30PM) AND ARE NOT TAKEN ON A WALK-IN BASIS.  


WHAT TO BRING WHEN YOU APPLY

  • Proof of identity by presenting an unexpired Driver’s License, State/Federal ID or Passport
  • Proof of residency as a Fairfield resident (if your ID does not reflect Fairfield, bring 2 forms of alternate proof i.e., vehicle registration, phone bill, bank statement, lease agreement, etc.)
  • Social Security number*
  • A witness, 18 years of age or older

*Your social security number is required by law for US citizens and will be kept confidential.
*Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

There is a minimum 72-hour waiting time before a license can be issued.  Once issued, the license must be used within 30 days of the pick-up date and is only valid within the State of New Jersey.
