One important issue to note related to the UCR report

Fairfield usually ranks within the top six municipalities in Essex County for the highest crime rate per capita. For 2006, Fairfield ranked fourth highest (with an overall crime rate of 49.8% per 1,000 persons) of Essex County's 21 municipalities and this figure is misleading.

The Crime Rate per 1,000 (where this figure comes from) is based upon the full-time residential population which is estimated to be somewhere below 8,000 persons. However, Fairfield's daytime population, due to the large business and industrial base, has often been estimated to be closer to 40,000 - 50,000 persons. This more realistic daytime population figure is not considered when the statistics are published.
