Commercial Burglary
Fairfield Police were called to Skylite Deli at 3:20am today after a bakery delivery person reported finding an open door. The rear door to the Passaic Avenue deli was found to have been forced open. As of this time it is reported that numerous cartons of cigarettes is missing from inside. This delicatessen was also burglarized on June 16, 2009.

Narcotics & DWI Arrest
Fairfield police officer Gerald Veneziano stopped a 1996 Ford just before 2:00am this morning on Route 46 for a traffic violation. After speaking with the driver of the vehicle, Christopher Pagliaro, 29 of Pequannock, Officer Veneziano had him exit the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. Mr. Pagliaro was subsquently arrested for DWI and transported to police headquarters. During processing, Mr. Pagliaro was found to be possession of marijuana. He was charged with DWI, possession of marijuana, numerous traffic violations and released on his own recognizance pending a June 25th municipal court appearance.

Narcotics Arrest
At 8:20pm, Officer Frank Tracey stopped a 1995 Nissan on Route 46 West for a traffic violation. During the stop, Officer Tracey allegedly found that the driver of the vehicle, Matthew Oelbaum, 18 of Montclair was in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct and other traffic violations. He was later released on his own recogizance pending a June 25th municipal court appearance.

Commercial Burglary
Fairfield police were called a Daniel Road manufacturing business at approximately 3:45pm today after a burglary and theft was discovered. During the afternoon, an employee noticed a hole in the fence surrounding the rear of the business. They also then discovered that approximately $2,500.00 in aluminum blocks used for production was missing.

Fairfield Police were called to local delicatessen this morning after garbage men reported finding an open door. The rear door to the Passaic Avenue deli was found to have been forced open just before 5:00am today. As of this time it is reported that approximately $1,000.00 cash is missing from inside.

Residential Burglary Arrest
Fairfield detectives arrested a suspect in a January residential burglary that occurred on Mayhew Drive. The suspect was positively identified through DNA evidence found at the scene of the January crime. Richard Reynolds, 32 of Newark was charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy to commit burglary. Also charged as an accomplice was Keith Angelus, 33 of Hillside. Angelus was previously arrested in February 4th (see below) for a series of burglaries throughout the area. Reynolds is being held on $50,000.00 bail and was remanded to the Essex County Jail. Angelus has remained in the Essex County Jail on $100,000.00 bail since his February arrest.

Smoke Condition Forces Evacuation
Police were called to the La Quinta Hotel at approximately 3:30am on a reported smoke condition on the first floor. Responding officers and firefighters notified all guests to evacuate the hotel as a precaution. The source of the smoke was found to have come from a guest room on the first floor where a guest was using a microwave oven. After the room was ventilated all guests returned to their rooms.

DWI Arrest
Officer Jeffrey Didyk conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle seen traveling East on Fairfield Road with its trunk opened just after 1:00am today. After speaking with the driver, Dawn Squier, 37 of Pennsylvania, Officer Didyk asked her to complete field sobriety tests. Ms. Squier was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI, refusing to submit to breath tests and other traffic violations. She was later released pending a May 28th court appearance.

Driver Arrested after Vehicle Rolls
Police were called to the front of the municipal complex at approximately 2:25pm after several motorists reported a traffic accident involving a vehicle that rolled over. Upon arrival, the officers found a Jeep SUV on it's side after having apparently struck the curb and a fire hydrant. The driver of the vehicle, Robert Regensburger, 29, of New York City was already outside the vehicle and sitting on the curb. Mr. Regensburger was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson. He was admitted to the hospital and released from police custody after being charged with DWI. He is due to appear in municipal court on May 21, 2009.

Theft from Vehicle
A Cortland, NY man reported a theft from his vehicle this morning. The victim reported parking his 2003 Ford pickup truck in the lot of the La Quinta hotel on Two Bridges road at approximately 7:50am. He was gone from the vehicle for approximately five minutes. When he returned to the vehicle he allegedly discovered the front driver's side window was smashed open. The victim reported his blackberry cellular phone and a portable GPS unit missing from inside the vehicle.

Theft from Vehicle
A local landscaping company reported the theft of landscaping equipment this afternoon while working on Scott Drive. At approximately 2:00pm the crew finished a job on Scott Drive and continued to another Fairfield location. At that time the crew noticed that a gas powered weed whacker was missing from the rear of the dump truck.

Twitter Not Working??? Follow Fairfield PD in a Secure Manner
Fairfield Police instituted yet another first for law enforcement by being the first New Jersey police department to utilize Twitter to keep everyone electronically informed of incidents and events happening in Fairfield.
Unfortunately, Twitter has experienced certain problems over the last few months and many people have indicated that they are missing messages. In an effort to keep everyone informed in a more reliable and secure manner, the Police Department is converting to a new service known as Nixle. In an effort to provide more reliable and effective communications with citizens, Fairfield Emergency Management has implemented Swiftreach Networks, Inc. as our emergency notification provider.
Swift911™ is a system designed to make phone calls to specific people or areas in the event of an emergency or for sharing important information. Fairfield Emergency Management , Fairfield Police Department and other departments will use this system to notify citizens by phone of important information regarding you or your property. The system can make thousands of calls in a minute to convey vital information. These messages may include information on floods, fires, water emergencies, road closures, missing persons, evacuation orders, and weather emergencies.
The Swiftreach Network Data has been provided by a third party data provider and includes land line telephone numbers in the Township of Fairfield. Carjacking Arrests
Fairfield Police officers in foot pursuit of carjack suspects
Fairfield Police arrested three suspects following a carjacking that occurred just off Route 46 in Clifton. Clifton Police broadcast an alert to surrounding police agencies after an Acura MDX was stolen at gunpoint just before 6:30am this morning. The stolen vehicle was allegedly being followed by a silver colored Mercedes Benz and last seeing traveling West on Route 46.
Shortly thereafter, Fairfield Officer David Proctor observed the Acura and the Mercedes entering Fairfield on Route 46 West. When Officer Proctor attempted to stop the vehicles they both fled with Officer Proctor in pursuit. During the pursuit, the Mercedes struck the rear of a box truck on Route 46 as it entered Montville Township and became disabled. The occupants of the box truck were not injured. Three suspects fled the vehicle on foot into a wooded area along the Passaic River with Fairfield Officers Proctor, Frank Tracey, Steven Ptaszynski, Christopher Hlubik, Brian Sabatelli, Sergeant Joseph Keegan and Corporal David Kane in pursuit. The suspects were all taken into custody shortly thereafter. The officers also recovered a loaded handgun at the scene.
Following the crash involving the Mercedes, the Acura continued west although no longer being pursued and allegedly became involved in a separate crash on Route 280 in West Orange. At least one suspect fled the Acura and allegedly carjacked another vehicle on Route 280 at the accident scene. That suspect is still at large.
The three suspects arrested in Fairfield were identified as Darrell Alford, 22 of Newark, Stefvon Cook, 24 of Irvington and a 17 year old juvenile male from Irvington. They were each charged in Fairfield with possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, possession of a firearm, eluding, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm by persons prohibited, possession of hollow point bullets, and conspiracy to commit the crime of receiving stolen property. The alleged driver of the vehicle, Stefvon Cook, additionally received numerous motor vehicle violations. Charges are pending against the trio for the actual carjacking in Clifton.
Alford and Cook were each held on $50,000.00 bail related to the Fairfield charges and transferred to the Essex County Jail in Newark. The juvenile was transferred to the Essex County youth house in Newark.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Officer Ian Rasmussen arrested an individual for DWI tonight. Officer Rasmussen stopped a 2008 Jeep on Route 46 at approximately 11:50pm for a traffic violation. Suspecting that the driver of the vehicle, Christopher Coiro, 25, of Denville might be under the influence, Officer Rasmussen administered field sobriety tests to Mr. Coiro and subsequently placed him under arrest. He was later charged with DWI, other motor vehicle violations and released pending a March 26th court appearance.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Officer Brian Holzmann arrested an individual for DWI this evening. Officer Holzmann was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Passaic Avenue at New Dutch Lane at approximately 10:40pm. Suspecting that the driver of a 2001 Isuzu, Matthew Muller, 19, of Fairfield might be under the influence, Officer Holzmann administered field sobriety tests and subsequently placed him under arrest. Muller was later charged with DWI, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance other motor vehicle violations. He was released pending a March 26th court appearance.

Prostitution Arrests
Fairfield detectives conducted an investigation involving alleged prostitution today at the Hampton Inn & Suites on Route 46. Following the investigation, police arrested two individuals late this afternoon. Jentry Elliott, 20 and Adereous Allen, 19 both from Portland, Oregon were charged engaging in and promoting prostitution (running a prostitution business). Elliott was also charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. During the arrest, police seized approximately $8,000.00 in cash from the suspects. Both suspects were held on $15,000 bail and remanded to the Essex County Jail in Newark pending a March 26th court appearance.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Officer Christopher Nicholas arrested an individual for DWI early this morning. Officer Nicholas stopped a 2007 Volvo on Route 46 at approximately 2:10am for a traffic violation. Suspecting that the driver of the vehicle, Paul Johnson, 42, of Morristown might be under the influence, Officer Nicholas administered field sobriety tests to Mr. Johnson and subsequently placed him under arrest. He was later charged with DWI, other motor vehicle violations and released pending a March 19th court appearance.

Fraud Warning
Fairfield Police were called by a resident today reporting that she received a suspicious check in the mail. The victim reported receiving a check for $4,900.00 from the "Royal Financial Consumer Lottery" in Canada. The letter accompanying the check contained instructions to deposit the check in her bank account and then contact a "lottery agent." The letter further directed the victim to send a check back to cover certain fees and taxes. The victim realized that this was a scam and contacted police. Fairfield police say that this is a common scam attempt and warn residents not to become a victim of these types of frauds.

Stolen Trailer
Representatives of a Pier Lane business reported a tractor/trailer stolen from their storage yard this morning. Employees arrived at 5:00am and noticed the 1998 Freightliner attached to an orange shipping container were missing. The tractor/trailer were last observed parked in the yard at 6:30pm on March 12th. The tractor/trailer and container were recovered later today in Woodbridge, NJ.

New Officers Graduate
Officer Steven Ptaszynski, Chief Charles G. Voelker Jr., and Officer Skylar Cauceglia
Two new Fairfield police officers are scheduled to begin patrol later this week. The officers, hired in September 2008, completed 24 weeks of training at the Essex County Police Academy today.
Officer Skylar Cauceglia, 23 of Wood Ridge, ranked first in the graduating class of 29 police officer recruits. Officer Cauceglia addressed his classmates and guests during the graduation ceremony held tonight at the Essex County College Police Academy in Cedar Grove. Officer Steven Ptaszynski, 24 of Boonton, ranked second in the class and was previously a corrections officer at the Morris County Correctional Facility.
Chief Voelker said that he is proud to welcome the officers to the ranks of the Police Department after successfully completing their training. Officers Cauceglia and Ptaszynski join the 40 other sworn police officers in Fairfield and are scheduled to begin an approximate three month field training program on Friday March 6th.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Sergeant Peter Pollack arrested an individual for DWI early this morning. Sergeant Pollack stopped a 2007 Jeep on Route 46 at approximately 1:45am today for a traffic violation. Suspecting that the driver of the vehicle, Maria Ferrito, 49, of Wayne might be under the influence, Sergeant Pollack administered field sobriety tests to Ms. Ferrito and subsequently placed her under arrest. She was later charged with DWI, other motor vehicle violations and released pending a March 5th court appearance.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Officer Alex Cifelli arrested an individual for DWI this evening following a traffic accident. Officer Cifelli responded to investigate the accident that occurred in the area of Route 46 at the Gately Overpass at 7:25pm. While speaking the driver of a 2008 Pontiac, later identified as Doreen Evans, 45 of Budd Lake, Officer Cifelli suspected that she might be under the influence. Officer Cifelli then administered field sobriety tests to Ms. Evans and subsequently placed her under arrest. She was later charged with DWI, other motor vehicle violations and released pending a March 5th court appearance.

A Warwick, New York man reported that his vehicle was burglarized this evening. The victim reported parking his 2001 Honda in a parking lot of his gym on Kingsbridge Road at 6:45pm today. When he returned to the vehicle shortly before 8:00pm he discovered that a passenger window was broken. The victim reported a backpack and cash were taken from the vehicle.

Fairfield Police Officer Frank Tracey arrested an individual for DWI early this morning. Officer Tracey stopped a 2009 Honda on Bloomfield Avenue just after 2:00am today for a traffic violation. Suspecting that the driver of the vehicle, Stephanie Giardelli, 24, of Fairfield might be under the influence, Officer Tracey administered field sobriety tests to her. Officer Tracey subsequently placed Ms. Giardelli under arrest. She was later charged with DWI, other motor vehicle violations and released pending a February 26th court appearance.

Residential Fire
The Fairfield Police & Fire departments responded to a Little Falls Road residence at 7:10pm today on a reported structure fire. A female resident called 9-1-1 after noticing smoke coming from a bedroom closet. The resident was home alone with the family dogs at the time. Firefighters were able to rescue a Rottweiler who was still inside the burning house. Fairfield police officers then rushed the dog to the animal emergency medical center on Bloomfield Avenue in Fairfield in a police vehicle. The dog was in critical condition at last report.
The fire and was brought under control at 7:45pm by the Fairfield Fire Department with the assistance of the West Caldwell, North Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove & Little Falls fire departments. The house sustained significant and is uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is still being investigated and appears to have been an accident.

DWI Arrest
Fairfield Police Officer Thomas Myers arrested an individual for DWI this afternoon. Officer Myers was flagged down by a motorist on Horseneck Road at approximately 1:40pm today. The motorist reported witnessing a motor vehicle accident on Route 80 West and had followed a vehicle that fled the accident scene to a Horseneck Road in Fairfield while she was calling 9-1-1.
Officer Myers spoke with the driver of a 2008 Volkswagen who was alleged to have been involved in the accident and suspected that she might be under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs. Based upon his observations and field sobriety tests, the driver later identified as Jessica Fabiano, 33 of Montclair was arrested for DWI. She was later charged with DWI within a school zone and other motor vehicle violations. She was also charged by NJ State Police with leaving the scene of an accident. Ms. Fabiano was later released pending a February 26th court appearance.

School Safety & Security Committee
The Fairfield Police Department officially announced the formation of a new community services committee. The newly formed School Safety & Security Committee will meet periodically to discuss issues related to school safety and security at the Township’s Community Center.
The committee was kicked off during the February 2009 meeting of the Fairfield Home School Association (HSA) after numerous parents and educators expressed an interest in working with the Police Department regarding potential school safety and security concerns. During the HSA meeting, members of the Police Department provided a short presentation relating to the history of school violence and some practical tips for parents to discuss with their children.

DWI Arrest
Officer David Proctor conducted a stop of a suspicious vehicle on Route 46 West at approximately 12:20am today. Officer Proctor suspected that the driver of the vehicle, Brian Pacris, 29 of Denville, might be under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs. After having Mr. Pacris perform field sobriety tests, Officer Proctor placed him under arrest for DWI. He was transported to police headquarters and charged with DWI and other traffic violations. He was subsequently released pending a February 12th court appearance.

Residential Burglary
Fairfield Police were called to respond to a Clinton Residence at 6:30pm today after the residents returned home and discovered that the house had been burglarized. Entry to the home was gained by forcing open a rear window. The victims were unsure what, if anything, was missing from the home at the time of the report.

Burglary Investigation Leads to Arrest
Fairfield Police have been investigating a series of residential burglaries occurring primarily during daytime hours over the last few months. Similar burglaries have occurred in municipalities surrounding Fairfield during this same period.
During their investigation, Fairfield detectives identified a likely suspect, Keith T. Angelus, 33, of Hillside, NJ. The detectives began conducting surveillance of Agnelus with the assistance of detectives from the West Caldwell, Caldwell, North Caldwell and Roseland Police departments approximately ten days ago. Yesterday, Angelus was tracked by the surveillance team to a residential neighborhood just off Rifle Camp Road in Woodland Park (formerly known as West Paterson). Angelus then allegedly committed a burglary to a single family residence and was stopped shortly thereafter.
Angelus fled on foot through a residential neighborhood along McBride Avenue in Woodland Park. He then allegedly committed two additional residential burglaries in Woodland Park while police were searching for him. Angelus was apprehended with the assistance of several area agencies approximately one hour later on Pompton Avenue in Woodland Park.
Angelus was charged with burglaries in Woodland Park and later turned over to Fairfield Police. He was additionally charged with burglary and theft that occurred in Fairfield on January 22, 2009. A subsequent search warrant was executed at Angelus’ Hillside residence that resulted in the seizure of jewelry and other items. Additional charges against Angelus are possible as area agencies begin further examining their outstanding burglary cases. Angelus is being held on $125,000.00 bail at the Essex County Jail in Newark.

DWI Arrest
Officer John McGrory stopped a 2004 Honda Accord on Fairfield Road at approximately 2:00am today for a traffic violation. During the stop, Officer McGrory had reason to believe that the driver, Gerald Cetrulo, 18, of Bloomfield, might be operating the vehicle while under the influence. Following field sobriety tests, Mr. Cetrulo was arrested and transported to Police Headquarters. He was charged with DWI, consuming alcohol while under the legal age and other motor vehicle violations. He was later released pending a January 29th municipal court appearance.

Residential Burglary
Fairfield Police responded to a Caryn Place residence today after a burglary was reported. The homeowner adivsed police that she had been out of the house for approximately 15 minutes starting at 11:15am. When she arrived home at approximately 11:35am she noticed a white late model vehicle exiting her driveway. The vehicle had a white license plate with blue lettering on it and was occupied by a male wearing a baseball cap. The victim soon discovered that the house had been forcibly entered by breaking the glass on a rear door. Numerous electronic items were reported missing from the house.

Vehicle Stolen & Recovered
Fairfield Police responded to an Edison Road business at approximately 5:15pm after a person reported their vehicle had been stolen. The victim, a male from Rockaway, reported starting his 2008 Chevrolet Impala to allow it to warm up outside his office at approximately 5:00pm. When the victim returned to the parking lot the vehicle was missing. The stolen vehicle was equipped with OnStar. When the responding officers spoke with an OnStar representative, they provided the exact location of the vehicle. This information was relayed to surrounding police agencies and within minutes the vehicle was located by the NJ State Police on Route 280 East in West Orange. The State Police arrested 21 year old Tyesha Daniels and two 16 year old juveniles from East Orange in the vehicle.

Aggravated Assault
Fairfield Police were called to the Chase Bank on Passaic Avenue near Little Falls Road at 11:45am on a report of fight in progress inside the bank. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of three juvenile males (a 14 and 16 year old from Montclair and a 15 year old from Newark). The 14 and 16 year old had fled back to their Passaic Avenue school prior to police arrival. The 15 and 16 year old males were charged with disorderly conduct and released to school officials. The 14 year old was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct and transferred to the Essex County Youth House in Newark.

Truck & Trailers Stolen
A Dwight Place trucking company reported a stolen truck and trailers to police just after 5:00am today. Employees arrived and discovered a tractor and two fully loaded trailers containing clothing were missing from the rear parking lot. It appears as though a vehicle was driven through the fence to gain access to the parking area. The tractor and one of the trailers (now empty) were recovered in Newark several days later.

The Fairfield Police Department announced today that is launching a new initiative in an effort to keep residents and business better informed of law enforcement related events occurring in Fairfield. “In a time where more and more people use their cellular telephones as a primary means of communication we felt that the Police Department can do a better job of keeping our community more aware of incidents and events occurring in within the Township in a more timely manner,” said Police Chief Charles Voelker.
Using the social networking site Twitter, the Police Department will broadcast brief messages related to significant events occurring within Fairfield to those who sign up to receive the messages. Users must go to http://www.twitter.com to register for a free account. Once registered, users can input their cellular telephone numbers under the Settings/Devices tab and configure specifically how and when they would like to be notified when an update is received from other Twitter users they decide to “follow.” Users needing help in setting up their account(s) should refer to the Help section on Twitter’s website.
Beginning January 16, 2009, any interested parties may register themselves at http://www.twitter.com. Once registered, simply begin the “Find People” process and decide who you would like to “Follow.” The Fairfield Police Department uses the Twitter screen name of “fairfieldpd”. Those to choose to participate should remember that if they elect to receive these messages on their cellular telephones regular text messaging usage guidelines with their cellular carrier will apply.
Chief Voelker said, “The Police Department is excited to be one of the first law enforcement agencies in New Jersey using the immensely popular social networking site as a means to communicate with the stakeholders in our community and encourages anyone to participate in this free program.”

Target Awards Grant 
Chief Charles G. Voelker Jr., accepted a check for grant funding from the Target stores last night at the Township council meeting. The Fairfield Police Department was awarded an $1,800.00 grant for the purposes of starting a new child safety identification program. Target established the Law Enforcement Grant Program in 1990. The purpose of the program is to support criminal justice agencies in working to make communities safer. Target has given 5% of its income to the communities it serves since 1946. Target's program has awarded millions of dollars to local law enforcement throughout the country since its inception. The new program is anticipated to be launched in the spring.

DWI Arrest
Officer Alex Cifelli stopped a 2009 Ford just after 2:00am today for a motor vehicle violation on Madison Road. After suspecting that the driver of the vehicle, Glenn Obici, 45 of Maryland might be under the influence, Officer Cifelli had Mr. Obici perform field sobriety tests. Mr. Obici was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI and other motor vehicle violations. He was later released pending a January 15th court appearance.

Thefts from Vehicles
Police responded to a Gardner Road vending business at approximately 6:00am today when they reported a theft from several of their vehicles. Employees reported that four of their work vans were forcibly entered sometime over the weekend and a large quantity of vending products were stolen from each of the vans.

DWI Arrest
At approximately 8:30pm tonight, Officer Ian Rasmussen stopped a 2007 Ford on Route 46 West for a traffic violation. During the stop, Officer Rasmussen administered field sobriety tests to the driver of the vehicle, Richard Grossbard, 42, of Morristown. Mr. Grossbard was later arrested and charged with DWI and several motor vehicle violations. He was later released pending a January 15th court appearance.

Stolen Vehicle
Police responded to an Evans Street business at 5:45am today on a reported stolen vehicle. Employees arrived for work this morning and noticed that a 2006 Ford van that was loaded with approximately $5,000.00 in vending products for delivery was stolen within the past 24 hours.

DWI Arrest
Officer Gerald Veneziano stopped a 1995 Acura on Little Falls Road just after midnight for an alleged traffic violation. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the driver, Garrett Hendry-Bodnar, 21 of West Paterson. He was charged with DWI and other traffic violations and later released pending a January 15th court appearance.

Residential Burglary
Police were called to a Mayhew Drive residence at 1:20pm today after a resident returned home and discovered the home had been burglarized. The house had been unoccupied for a little more than one hour when the crime occurred. The house was forcibly entered through the front door and a television, laptop computer and other electronics were reported as missing.

Stolen Vehicle
Police responded to the Target store on Route 46 at 1:20pm on a reported stolen vehicle. The victim reported parking her 1994 Oldsmobile in the store parking lot at 11:30am. When she returned to the lot just after 1:00pm she discovered the vehicle was missing. The vehicle was recovered on January 9th in Newark.
