The Fairfield Police Department completed the thrid phase
of installation of a mobile data computer system in January 2000.
The equipment was acquired through a grant funding from the State of New
Jersey and Federal Government.
This installation led to yet another first for
Fairfield. We were the first municipality in Essex County to have it's own system of this kind. Since implementation, many
other law enforcement agencies have requested access to this innovative system. All of the department's patrol units are now equipped with a mobile data
computer. The computers provide officers in the field with vital and
often life saving information. Officers have the capability to determine
if a vehicle and/or persons may be wanted for various crimes throughout the nation. Officers are now "better armed" to handle situations having this vital
information before becoming involved with potentially dangerous subjects.
Addtionally, officers can link to all Motor Vehicle computers and
determine the status of all driver's licenses and registrations. All of
these requests are returned to the patrol car in seconds.
With the computers installed in patrol cars, officers are also no longer
required to report to headquarters for patrol information. They can
communicate directly to headquarters and talk "real time" to any units
already in the field as well. This keeps officers on the road, thereby
providing the highest level of service to the community. Officers will soon be able to complete reports through
their mobile computers and will be able to electronically transmit them
to headquarters.
