The Township of Fairfield lies in the western most portion of Essex
County along the Passaic River, bordered by both Passaic and Morris
counties. The Township is 10.58 square miles in area. It is comprised
of residential homes, a large business, industrial base and
the Essex County Airport. The residential population is estimated at 7,500. However, the daily
population has been estimated to be as much as 60,000. State Highway Route 46 and
Interstate 80 divide the Township and provide for easy access to New York
City which lies approximately 15 miles to the east.
The Township's Police Department was established in 1937 when the
municipality was known as Caldwell Township. In 1962, the Township's
name was changed to Fairfield as was the Police Department's. The
department currently employs 40 sworn officers and 7 civilians. In 2007,
the Police Department responded to approximately 25,000 actual calls for service.

patrol, investigative, records, community services, traffic, training,
